A high blood sugar reading is frightening, and the first question is always the same: how do I bring it down right now? The honest answer has three parts. A few things work within an hour. A few work over a day. And the things that stop it happening again take weeks. This guide covers all three, and the one situation where you must not wait at all.
First, is this an emergency?
Call a doctor or go to a hospital now if your reading is above 300 mg/dL and you have any of these: vomiting, stomach pain, fast breathing, a fruity smell on the breath, confusion, or extreme thirst with very frequent urination. These can signal a dangerous condition called ketoacidosis. Do not try to manage that at home.
A reading between 180 and 300 with no such symptoms is high but not an emergency. That is what the rest of this article is for.
How to reduce blood sugar in the next hour
- Take your prescribed medicine or insulin if you missed it. A missed dose is the most common reason for a sudden spike. Never take extra insulin without your doctor's instructions.
- Drink two glasses of plain water. High sugar dehydrates you, and the kidneys need water to flush excess glucose. Water only, no juice, no sweet drinks.
- Walk for 15 to 20 minutes. Working muscles pull glucose out of the blood without needing insulin. A brisk walk after a high reading can lower it by 20 to 40 mg/dL. Skip this if you are above 300 or feel unwell.
- Stop eating carbs for now. No fruit, roti, rice or snacks until the reading settles. If hungry, have paneer, boiled eggs, nuts or cucumber.
- Recheck after an hour. Know your trend, not just one number.
How to bring it down over the day
- Eat vegetables and protein first, carbs last. Sabzi and dal before roti or rice. This order alone cuts the after-meal spike by a large margin.
- Halve the roti and rice portion. Fill the gap with dal, paneer, curd and vegetables.
- Walk 10 to 15 minutes after every meal. This is the single most effective daily habit. Read our guide on the 15-minute post-meal habit.
- Cut sugary chai, juice and cold drinks completely. Liquid sugar hits the blood within minutes.
- Sleep 7 to 8 hours. One short night raises next-day fasting sugar noticeably.
Indian foods that help control sugar spikes
| Food | How it helps | How to use |
|---|---|---|
| Methi seeds | Soluble fibre slows sugar absorption | 1 tsp soaked overnight, eaten before breakfast |
| Karela (bitter gourd) | Traditionally used to support healthy glucose levels | Sabzi or a small glass of juice |
| Jamun | Seed and fruit traditionally used in India for sugar balance | Fresh in season, or seed powder |
| Cinnamon (dalchini) | May improve how cells respond to insulin | Half a teaspoon in curd or on oats |
| Amla | Vitamin C and fibre, low sugar | One a day, fresh or as juice without added sugar |
| Whole dals and chana | Protein and fibre blunt the spike | A bowl with every meal |
| Curd | Protein and probiotics, slows digestion | A bowl with lunch |
What causes a sudden high reading?
- A missed or late medicine dose
- A large carb-heavy meal, sweets or a sugary drink
- Illness, fever or infection, which raise stress hormones
- Poor sleep or high stress
- Steroid medicines, including some cough syrups and injections
- Skipping the usual walk or exercise
- Dehydration
If your readings are creeping up over weeks rather than spiking once, the cause is usually insulin resistance building over time. Check where you stand with our blood sugar levels chart by age, and read about insulin resistance causes and natural solutions.
The weekly plan that stops repeat spikes
- Fixed meal times, no skipping and no late dinners
- Half the plate vegetables at lunch and dinner
- 150 minutes of walking a week plus two strength sessions
- Zero sugary drinks, sweets kept for rare occasions
- Log your readings and share them with your doctor every visit
- Retest HbA1c every three months to see the true average
Where Purezen SugarStopper fits in
Purezen SugarStopper brings together the very ingredients in the table above in capsule form: Karela, Gurmar, Jamun, Fenugreek, Cinnamon, Berberine, Banaba, Alpha Lipoic Acid and Chromium. These are herbs and nutrients traditionally used to support healthy blood sugar balance and insulin sensitivity.
Purezen is FSSAI registered and the capsules use a vegetable capsule shell. SugarStopper is taken one capsule 30 minutes before lunch and one before dinner. It is a support for the daily routine above, not an emergency remedy and not a replacement for prescribed medicine. If you take diabetes medicine, tell your doctor before adding any supplement, because the combination may lower sugar more than expected.

No safe method works in 10 minutes except prescribed insulin. Water and a brisk walk start working within 30 to 60 minutes.

What should I eat when blood sugar is high?
Protein and vegetables: paneer, eggs, dal, curd, cucumber, salad. Avoid all carbs, fruit and sweet drinks until the reading settles.

Turant: paani piyo, 15 minute tez chalo, aur meethi cheez band karo. Roz: khaane ke baad chalo, roti-chawal aadha karo, sabzi aur dal badhao, aur doctor ki dawa samay par lo.
