Quick answer: The simplest and most useful way to track your sleep is a sleep diary kept for two weeks. Phone apps and smartwatches add convenience and are reasonably good at measuring how long you slept, but their estimates of sleep stages are rough. If you suspect a real sleep disorder, such as loud snoring with gasping, only a proper sleep study can confirm it.
Ways to track your sleep
| Method | What it tells you | How accurate | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep diary (notebook or notes app) | Bedtime, time to fall asleep, wake-ups, wake time, how rested you feel, and what might affect it | Good for patterns; based on your own estimate | Free |
| Phone apps | Rough sleep time from movement and sound; many can record snoring | Rough; depends on phone placement | Free to low |
| Smartwatch or fitness band | Sleep duration, wake-ups, heart rate, estimated light, deep and REM sleep | Fairly good for duration; stage estimates are approximate | Moderate |
| Smart ring or under-mattress sensor | Similar to a watch, less intrusive to wear | Similar to watches | Moderate to high |
| Sleep study (polysomnography) | Brain waves, breathing, oxygen, heart and leg movements through the night | The medical gold standard | Through a doctor |
How to keep a sleep diary
Each morning, spend one minute noting:
- What time you went to bed and roughly when you fell asleep
- How many times you woke up, and for how long
- What time you woke up and got out of bed
- How rested you feel, on a scale of 1 to 5
- Anything that may have affected your sleep: late chai or coffee, alcohol, a heavy dinner, late screens, stress, exercise
After two weeks, patterns usually jump out, for example worse sleep after late coffee or on nights with late screen time. A diary is also exactly what a doctor will ask for if you seek help.
Which numbers actually matter
- Total sleep time: most adults need 7 to 9 hours. See how many hours of sleep you need.
- Time to fall asleep: 10 to 20 minutes is healthy. Under 5 minutes often means you are sleep-deprived; regularly over 30 minutes suggests trouble falling asleep.
- Wake-ups: brief awakenings are normal. Long or frequent ones are worth noting.
- Sleep efficiency: time asleep divided by time in bed. 85% or more is good.
- Consistency: how much your bedtime and wake time vary. Smaller is better.
- How you feel: the most important number of all. If you wake refreshed and stay alert through the day, your sleep is working.
Don't let the tracker ruin your sleep
Some people become so anxious about their tracker's scores that they sleep worse. Sleep researchers even have a name for it: orthosomnia. Use the data to spot patterns and test changes, not to chase a perfect score every night. If checking the numbers makes you anxious, switch to the diary for a while.
Using your data to sleep better
Change one thing at a time, such as a fixed wake time, no screens in the last hour, or no caffeine after 2 pm, and track for a week to see the effect. For ideas, read how to improve sleep quality and why you can't sleep at night.
If your routine is in place and your diary still shows slow sleep onset or restless nights, Purezen SleepStory brings together 3 mg Melatonin, Ashwagandha, Valerian Root, Chamomile and Magnesium, ingredients traditionally used to support a calm mind and natural, restful sleep. It is FSSAI registered, uses a vegetable capsule shell and is non habit forming. Tracking before and after is a good way to judge whether it helps you.
When to see a doctor
- Loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, or a partner notices you stop breathing
- Strong daytime sleepiness despite enough hours in bed
- Trouble sleeping on most nights for more than three months
- Strong urges to move your legs at night
Take your sleep diary or tracker data along; it helps the doctor a great deal.
Frequently asked questions
Are sleep tracking apps accurate?
They are reasonable at estimating how long you slept, but not reliable for deep and REM sleep. Use them for trends over weeks, not night-by-night precision.
Is a smartwatch better than a phone app?
Usually, yes. A watch on your wrist measures movement and heart rate directly, while a phone on the mattress picks up movement less reliably.
How long should I track my sleep?
Two weeks is enough to see your pattern. After that, track again whenever you make a change you want to test.
Neend ko kaise track karein?
Sabse aasan tareeka hai 2 hafte tak roz subah ek chhoti diary likhna: kab soye, kitni der mein neend aayi, raat mein kitni baar uthe, kab jaage aur subah kaisa mehsoos hua. Smartwatch ya app bhi madad karte hain, lekin unke deep aur REM sleep ke numbers sirf andaaza hote hain.
