The main hyaluronic acid benefits are hydration and a softer, plumper feel to the skin. It is a natural moisture-holding molecule your body already makes, and it can be applied as a serum or taken by mouth. Small trials suggest that about 120 mg a day by mouth for 12 weeks may help support skin moisture and fine lines.

Hyaluronic acid, often shortened to HA, is now on the label of many face serums and skin supplements in India. It sounds technical, but the idea behind it is simple. To understand how it fits with other skin nutrients, see our guides on collagen for skin and vitamins for skin.

What hyaluronic acid does in your body

Hyaluronic acid is a long, slippery sugar chain found in skin, joints and eyes. It is not a harsh acid like the ones used in peels. Its main job is to hold water. About half of the body's hyaluronic acid sits in the skin, where it fills the space between cells and keeps the deeper layers cushioned and moist.

It also helps lubricate joints and keeps the fluid inside the eye in shape. The body breaks it down and makes fresh supplies all the time.

As we age, skin makes less hyaluronic acid and holds less water. Sun exposure, pollution, smoking and very dry air, such as long hours in AC rooms, can add to this. The result is skin that looks duller, feels tight and shows fine lines more easily.

  • In skin: holds water and keeps skin feeling soft and plump.
  • In joints: part of the fluid that helps joints move smoothly.
  • In eyes: part of the gel that gives the eyeball its shape.

Hyaluronic acid benefits: serum vs oral supplement

You can use HA on the skin, take it by mouth, or both. They work in different ways, and the hyaluronic acid benefits you can expect from each are a little different. Oral HA is also found in skin formulas such as Purezen GlowGetter, alongside collagen and vitamin C. GlowGetter is not vegetarian, as it contains marine collagen in a gelatin capsule.

Point Serum on skin Oral supplement
How it works Draws water into the top layer of skin Studies suggest it is broken down in the gut and may signal skin to hold more moisture
How fast Skin feels softer within minutes Changes seen after 8 to 12 weeks in trials
Where it helps Surface hydration Moisture across the skin, from within
Typical amount 2 to 3 drops About 120 mg a day in trials
Best for Quick comfort for dry or tight skin Steady long-term support

Injections and fillers are a separate topic. They are medical procedures done by a dermatologist, not skincare.

What studies show for skin moisture and wrinkles

Research on oral HA is still building, but a few placebo-controlled trials point in the same direction. A placebo is a dummy pill, used so that results can be compared fairly.

  • A 2021 trial in 40 Asian adults aged 35 to 64 gave 120 mg of HA a day for 12 weeks. Compared with placebo, the HA group showed better skin water content, elasticity and wrinkle scores.
  • A 2025 trial in 150 healthy adults tested 60 mg and 120 mg a day for 12 weeks. The 120 mg dose improved skin hydration and elasticity and reduced wrinkle depth around the eyes. The 60 mg dose showed smaller effects.
  • No changes were seen in skin colour or pore size in the larger trial.

These trials were small and some were funded by HA makers, so the evidence is promising rather than final. The hyaluronic acid benefits seen were gradual changes over 2 to 3 months, not overnight results.

How to use a hyaluronic acid serum properly

HA serum works by pulling water in. If the skin and air are both dry, it has little water to hold. The trick is to give it water and then seal it in.

  1. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser.
  2. Leave skin slightly damp, or mist it with water.
  3. Press 2 to 3 drops of serum over the face and neck.
  4. Follow within a minute with a moisturiser to lock in the water.
  5. In the morning, finish with sunscreen.

You can use it morning and night. It goes well with vitamin C serum, niacinamide and most moisturisers. If you have very sensitive skin, patch test on the inner arm for 2 to 3 days first.

Foods that support your body's own hyaluronic acid

To keep hyaluronic acid benefits going from within, focus on the whole diet. There is no Indian food that is a rich source of HA itself, except some bone broths. But your skin needs certain nutrients to keep making it, along with collagen.

Nutrient Why it matters Indian food sources
Vitamin C Needed for collagen and skin repair Amla, guava, lemon, capsicum
Zinc Supports skin cell renewal Pumpkin seeds, chana, cashew, eggs
Protein Building blocks for skin structure Dal, paneer, curd, soya, fish, chicken
Healthy fats Help the skin barrier hold moisture Walnuts, flaxseed, mustard oil, fish
Water Gives HA water to hold Plain water, chaas, coconut water

Who should be careful with hyaluronic acid

HA is generally well tolerated, because the body already makes it. A few points to keep in mind:

  • Serums: Some people feel stinging or redness, often from other ingredients in the bottle. Stop if your skin reacts.
  • Oral supplements: Trials reported very few side effects at the doses studied. Mild stomach upset is possible.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: There is not enough research on oral HA. Use serums only, unless your doctor agrees.
  • Source: HA can be made by fermentation or taken from animal sources, and many skin supplements also contain collagen. Check the label if you are vegetarian.
  • Medicines and ongoing care: If you are under a dermatologist's care or on any long-term medicine, tell your doctor before starting a supplement.

Frequently asked questions

Is hyaluronic acid an exfoliating acid?

No. Despite the name, it does not peel or exfoliate the skin. It is a moisture-holding molecule and suits most skin types, including oily skin.

Hyaluronic acid serum kab lagana chahiye?

Chehra dhone ke baad, jab skin thodi geeli ho, tab 2 se 3 boond lagayein. Uske baad moisturiser zaroor lagayein, aur din mein sunscreen bhi.

Can I take a hyaluronic acid supplement and use a serum together?

Yes. They work in different ways, so many people use both. The serum helps the surface, while oral HA was studied for moisture from within.

How long do hyaluronic acid benefits take to show?

A serum makes skin feel softer within minutes. In oral trials, changes in moisture and fine lines showed after 8 to 12 weeks of daily use.

Is hyaluronic acid vegetarian?

It depends on the source. Some HA is made by fermentation and some comes from animal sources. Always read the label, especially for combined skin supplements.
