The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland at the front of your neck. It makes hormones that set your body's speed: how fast you burn energy, how warm you feel, how your heart beats and how your mind focuses. Doctors call this speed your metabolism.
Thyroid problems are very common in India. Roughly 1 in 10 adults has an underactive thyroid, and women are five to eight times more likely to be affected than men. The symptoms creep in slowly, so many people blame stress or age for years.
The two main thyroid problems
- Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). The gland makes too little hormone. The body slows down. This is the common type in India.
- Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). The gland makes too much hormone. The body runs too fast.
Hypothyroid symptoms: thyroid ke lakshan when the gland is slow
Watch for a cluster of these signs, not just one:
- Constant tiredness, even after full sleep
- Weight gain despite eating the same
- Feeling cold when others are comfortable
- Dry skin and brittle nails
- Hair fall, including thinning of the outer eyebrows
- Constipation
- Puffy face, especially around the eyes
- Heavy or irregular periods
- Brain fog, forgetfulness and low mood
- Hoarse voice and slow heartbeat
- Rising cholesterol in reports
Hyperthyroid symptoms: when the gland is overactive
- Weight loss despite a good appetite
- Fast or irregular heartbeat, palpitations
- Feeling hot and sweating easily
- Shaky hands, anxiety, irritability
- Poor sleep
- Very light or missed periods
- Bulging or irritated eyes in some cases
Thyroid symptoms in women: why they matter more
Thyroid hormones and reproductive hormones work as a team. In women, a slow thyroid often shows up first as period changes, hair fall, weight gain or trouble conceiving. Thyroid testing is standard before and during pregnancy for the same reason.
Thyroid imbalance can also mimic or worsen PCOD. If your symptoms overlap, read our guide on PCOD meaning, symptoms and PCOD vs PCOS.
TSH, T3 and T4 normal range chart
A thyroid profile blood test measures three things. TSH full form is Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. It is the signal your brain sends to the gland, so it is the most sensitive marker. T4 and T3 are the hormones the gland actually makes.
| Test | Typical adult normal range | What a change suggests |
|---|---|---|
| TSH | 0.4 to 4.0 mIU/L | High TSH points to an underactive thyroid, low TSH to an overactive one |
| Free T4 | 0.8 to 1.8 ng/dL | Low in hypothyroidism, high in hyperthyroidism |
| Total T3 | 80 to 200 ng/dL | Usually high in hyperthyroidism |
Ranges vary slightly between labs, so always read the range printed on your own report. A mildly high TSH with normal T4 is called subclinical hypothyroidism, an early stage that doctors often just monitor. Pregnant women are judged on separate, trimester-wise TSH ranges set by their doctor.
When should you get a thyroid test?
- You have three or more symptoms from the lists above
- Thyroid problems run in your family
- You are planning pregnancy or have irregular periods
- Your weight or cholesterol changed without a clear reason
- You are above 35 and have never been tested
The test is simple, needs no fasting for TSH alone, and costs a few hundred rupees at most Indian labs.
Food and lifestyle: what actually helps
- Use iodised salt. It usually covers daily iodine needs.
- Eat selenium and zinc rich foods: eggs, nuts, seeds, dals and whole grains.
- If you take thyroid medicine, take it on an empty stomach. Keep calcium, iron and soya at least 4 hours away from it.
- Very large daily amounts of raw cabbage-family vegetables or soya can interfere in some people. Normal cooked portions are fine.
- Sleep, stress control and strength exercise all support a healthy metabolism.
Where Purezen ThyroFix fits in
Purezen ThyroFix is a 14-ingredient capsule built around the nutrients the thyroid depends on: Iodine from Sea Kelp, Selenium, Zinc and Copper, along with L-Tyrosine, Ashwagandha, Kachnar and Guggul. These are nutrients and herbs traditionally used to support healthy thyroid function and metabolism.
Purezen is FSSAI registered and the capsules are vegetarian. Two things matter here. ThyroFix is not a replacement for thyroid medicine prescribed by your doctor. And it works best alongside good food, activity and regular testing, not in place of them.
Frequently asked questions
What is a normal TSH level by age?
For most adults the working range is 0.4 to 4.0 mIU/L. TSH drifts slightly higher with age, and doctors may accept somewhat higher values in seniors. Your doctor interprets the number in context.
Can thyroid problems be cured?
Most hypothyroidism is managed rather than cured. Daily medicine keeps levels normal, and people live completely normal lives. Some causes of hyperthyroidism can be treated definitively.
What happens if thyroid problems are ignored?
Untreated imbalance strains the heart, cholesterol, fertility and mood over the years. Since testing is cheap and treatment works, ignoring it makes no sense.
What is the difference between T3, T4 and TSH?
TSH is the brain's instruction to the gland. T4 is the main hormone the gland releases. T3 is the active form the body finally uses.
Do thyroid problems cause hair fall?
Yes, both underactive and overactive thyroid can trigger diffuse hair fall. Hair usually recovers once levels are corrected, though it takes a few months.
