Quick answer: For most people, sleeping on your side is better than sleeping on your back, and the left side has a small edge. It helps most with acid reflux and heartburn, and doctors often suggest it in later pregnancy. The right side is perfectly fine for most people, and some find it more comfortable. The best side is the one that lets you sleep well without waking with pain, heartburn or a stiff shoulder.
Left vs right side: which suits your situation
| Your situation | Best position | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Acid reflux or heartburn at night | Left side | The stomach sits below the food pipe on this side, so acid is less likely to flow back up |
| Pregnancy, especially after about 28 weeks | On your side; left is often suggested | Keeps the baby's weight off a major blood vessel and supports blood flow |
| Snoring or mild sleep apnoea | Either side | Side sleeping keeps the airway more open than lying on your back |
| Lower back pain | Either side, pillow between the knees | Keeps the hips and spine in line |
| Shoulder pain | The opposite side, or alternate | Avoids pressing on the sore joint all night |
| A heart condition | Whichever side is most comfortable | Many people with heart problems find the right side easier; follow your doctor's advice |
Why the left side is often recommended
The clearest evidence is for heartburn. Studies that measure acid in the food pipe during sleep find less acid exposure when people lie on their left side than on their right. If you often wake with a burning chest or a sour taste, switching to the left side is a simple thing to try, along with a lighter, earlier dinner.
You will also read that left-side sleeping helps the lymphatic system, digestion or "detox". These claims are based on body layout rather than strong human studies, so treat them as possible small benefits, not proven ones.
Is it bad to sleep on the right side?
No. For most healthy people the right side is just as restful. The main exception is heartburn, which tends to be worse on the right. If you are comfortable on your right side and wake up fresh, there is no reason to change.
Side sleeping vs back and stomach
- Side: the best all-rounder for most adults, and the best choice if you snore.
- Back: good for spine alignment, but worsens snoring and sleep apnoea for many people.
- Stomach: the hardest on the neck and lower back, since the head stays turned all night. Best avoided if you wake stiff.

How to train yourself to sleep on your side
- Use a body pillow or a pillow at your back so you don't roll over.
- Put a pillow between your knees to keep your hips level.
- Choose a pillow high enough to keep your neck straight, filling the gap between shoulder and ear.
- Give it three to four weeks. The body gets used to a new position slowly.
Position is only part of good sleep
A fixed bedtime, a dark and cool room, no screens in the last hour and no tea or coffee after mid-afternoon matter more than which side you lie on. If the room and routine are sorted and sleep still doesn't come easily, Purezen SleepStory brings together 3 mg Melatonin, Ashwagandha, Valerian Root, Chamomile and Magnesium, ingredients traditionally used to support a calm mind and natural, restful sleep. It is FSSAI registered, uses a vegetable capsule shell and is non habit forming.
