Hair is made almost entirely of a protein called keratin, and the follicle that grows it is one of the most active tissues in your body. That is why hair is often the first place a poor diet shows: when protein, iron or zinc run short, the body cuts supply to hair before it cuts anything vital. The good news is that the foods that fix this are everyday Indian foods.

The nutrients hair actually needs

  • Protein to build the hair strand itself
  • Iron to carry oxygen to the follicle; low iron is the leading food-related cause of hair fall in Indian women
  • Zinc for hair tissue growth and repair
  • Vitamin D, linked with healthy follicle cycling
  • Vitamin B12 and folate for fast-dividing follicle cells; B12 is often low in vegetarians
  • Omega-3 fats for scalp health
  • Vitamin C to absorb iron from plant foods and to build collagen around the follicle
  • Vitamin E and antioxidants to protect the scalp from oxidative stress

Not sure you are eating enough protein? Use our Indian food protein calculator. Most people with thin, falling hair are well short.

A hair-friendly day of eating

Vegetarian: milk and a besan chilla for breakfast; an amla or guava mid-morning; dal, roti, a palak sabzi with lemon and curd at lunch; roasted chana and a few almonds in the evening; paneer or soya with vegetables and roti for dinner; a tablespoon of flaxseed and pumpkin seeds somewhere in the day.

Non-vegetarian: two eggs and a roti for breakfast; a fruit mid-morning; rice, dal, fish curry and salad at lunch; nuts in the evening; chicken with vegetables for dinner.

What slows hair growth

  • Crash diets. A sudden cut in food or protein pushes many hairs into the resting phase; heavy shedding follows two to three months later.
  • Too much sugar and junk food, which crowd out the nutrients hair needs.
  • Tea with meals, which reduces iron absorption. Keep tea an hour away from lunch and dinner.
  • Megadoses of vitamin A or selenium supplements, which can actually cause hair loss.
  • Alcohol and smoking, which reduce nutrient supply to the scalp.

When food alone is not enough

If hair fall continues after 3 months of eating well, get tested. Low ferritin, vitamin D, B12 and thyroid problems are the usual hidden causes. Read which deficiencies cause hair loss and hair fall reasons and how to stop it. For thinning at the crown or hairline, the hormone DHT is often involved; see DHT blockers explained.

Where Purezen RootCause fits in

Purezen RootCause is an 11-ingredient capsule with Pumpkin Seed Extract for natural DHT support, Bhringraj, Amla, Noni and L-Cysteine, ingredients traditionally used to support stronger hair, less shedding and better volume. It is FSSAI registered. RootCause uses a gelatin capsule shell, so it is not a vegetarian product. It works alongside a good diet, not instead of one, and needs at least 3 months of daily use to judge fairly.

Frequently asked questions

Which food is best for hair growth?

There is no single best food. Eggs, dals and paneer for protein, leafy greens with vitamin C for iron, and pumpkin seeds for zinc cover most of what hair needs.

How long does it take for diet to improve hair?

Hair grows about 1 cm a month, and new growth takes time to show. Expect less shedding in 2 to 3 months and visible thickness in 4 to 6 months.

Do curry leaves help hair growth?

Curry leaves are a traditional Indian hair remedy and add antioxidants and some iron to food. They are a good addition, but protein, iron and zinc matter far more.

Does biotin help hair grow faster?

Only if you are actually low in biotin, which is uncommon on a normal diet. Eggs, nuts and seeds supply plenty.

Baal ghane karne ke liye kya khayein?

Ande, dal, paneer, dahi, palak aur methi (nimbu ke saath), amla, kaddu ke beej, alsi aur akhrot. Crash diet se bachein aur khane ke saath chai na lein.
