Losing 50 to 100 strands a day is normal. Every hair grows for a few years, rests for a few months, then falls to make room for a new one. About 10 percent of your hair is resting at any time, so a small daily shed on the pillow, comb and bathroom floor is the cycle working as it should.
Hair fall becomes a problem when the shed clearly increases, the ponytail feels thinner, the parting looks wider, or the hairline moves back. In India this is so common that people accept it as normal ageing. It is not. Almost every case has a reason, and most reasons can be fixed.
How to check if your hair fall is abnormal
- The pull test. Run your fingers through a clean, dry section of about 60 strands and tug gently. If more than 5 or 6 come away, shedding is high.
- The ponytail test. Compare the thickness of your ponytail with a photo from a year ago.
- The parting test. A parting that shows more scalp than before points to gradual thinning.
Hair fall reasons: the common causes in India
| Type | How it looks | Usual trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Telogen effluvium (shock shedding) | Sudden, heavy fall from all over the scalp, 2 to 3 months after a trigger | Fever, dengue, typhoid, viral illness, surgery, childbirth, crash diets, severe stress |
| Pattern hair loss (DHT related) | Gradual thinning at the crown and hairline in men; wider parting in women | Genetics plus the hormone DHT shrinking follicles |
| Nutritional | Diffuse thinning, dull and brittle strands | Low iron, ferritin, vitamin D, B12, zinc or protein |
| Hormonal | Thinning plus tiredness, weight change or irregular periods | Thyroid imbalance, PCOD, post-pregnancy shifts |
| Scalp related | Itching, flakes, greasy scalp with shedding | Dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, fungal infection |
| Traction and damage | Thinning at the temples and hairline | Tight buns and braids, heat styling, chemical treatments, hard water |
| Alopecia areata | Smooth, round bald patches | Autoimmune, needs a dermatologist |
What is DHT and why does it matter?
DHT, or dihydrotestosterone, is a hormone made from testosterone. In people with the genes for pattern hair loss, DHT binds to hair follicles and slowly shrinks them. Each new hair grows thinner and shorter until the follicle stops producing. This is the most common cause of permanent thinning in men, and a major cause of parting widening in women after 30. Read our full guide to DHT blockers and preventing hair loss.
Why Indian women lose hair so often
Iron deficiency is the leading reason. Over half of Indian women are anaemic, and hair is one of the first places the body cuts supply when iron runs short. Low vitamin D is nearly as common, and low B12 is frequent in vegetarians. Add thyroid imbalance and PCOD, both widespread, and the picture is clear. Blood tests, not new shampoos, are the first step. See which vitamin deficiencies cause hair loss.
Tests worth doing before you spend on treatments
- CBC with haemoglobin
- Serum ferritin, the stored iron. Many dermatologists want it above 40 for hair regrowth
- Vitamin D and vitamin B12
- TSH for thyroid. Read our thyroid symptoms and TSH range guide
- For women with irregular periods or acne, hormone tests for PCOD. Read PCOD symptoms and meaning
How to stop hair fall: what actually works
- Fix the trigger. Correct iron, vitamin D, B12 and thyroid under a doctor. Shock shedding after illness stops on its own in 3 to 6 months once you recover.
- Eat enough protein. About 1 gram per kilo of body weight daily. Hair is made of protein and gets none when intake is short.
- Wash gently, 2 to 3 times a week. Use a mild shampoo, condition the lengths, and never rub wet hair with a towel.
- Treat dandruff properly. An anti-fungal shampoo twice a week until the scalp is clear.
- Loosen the hairstyle. No tight buns, braids or high ponytails daily. Give the hairline a break.
- Deal with hard water. A shower filter or a final rinse with filtered water reduces mineral build-up and breakage.
- Massage the scalp. Five minutes daily with fingertips improves blood flow. Rosemary oil is popular and has modest evidence for pattern thinning.
- Sleep and stress. Poor sleep and high stress hormones push more hair into the resting phase. Read our guide on cortisol and how to reduce it.
- For pattern loss, see a dermatologist early. Proven medical treatments work best before follicles shrink completely.
Give any change at least 3 to 6 months. Hair grows about 1 cm a month, so results take time to show.
Where Purezen RootCause fits in
Purezen RootCause is an 11-ingredient capsule built around Pumpkin Seed Extract, Bhringraj, Amla, Noni and the amino acid L-Cysteine. Pumpkin seed is traditionally used as a natural DHT support, and the blend is traditionally used to support stronger hair, less shedding and better volume from the follicle up.
Purezen is FSSAI registered. RootCause is a support, not a substitute. It works alongside correcting deficiencies, a gentle hair routine and your doctor's advice, and it takes at least 3 months of daily use to judge fairly.
Frequently asked questions
How to stop hair fall immediately?
There is no instant fix, because hair that is falling today entered its resting phase 2 to 3 months ago. Stop the trigger now, and the shed slows over the next 8 to 12 weeks.
Which vitamin deficiency causes hair fall?
Iron (ferritin), vitamin D and vitamin B12 are the big three in India. Zinc and protein shortfalls also matter. Test before supplementing.
Does biotin help hair fall?
Only if you are actually biotin deficient, which is rare on a normal diet. For most people, iron, vitamin D and protein matter far more.
Does hard water cause hair fall?
Hard water makes hair dry, rough and prone to breakage, and worsens dandruff. It weakens strands more than it causes true fall from the root.
Hair fall kaise roke?
Pehle kaaran pakdo: iron, vitamin D, thyroid aur stress check karo. Protein badhao, baal haftey mein 2 se 3 baar dho, tight hairstyle chhodo, aur 3 se 6 mahine ka dhairya rakho.
