LFT full form is Liver Function Test. It is a single blood sample that checks around ten markers at once. Together they show whether your liver cells are under stress, whether bile is flowing freely, and whether the liver is making the proteins your body needs.

Most people search "LFT test kya hota hai" after a doctor asks for one, or after a report arrives with a few numbers in bold. The simple answer: it is your liver ki report card. This guide walks you through every line on it, the normal range for each, and what a high or low value usually means.

What an LFT test checks

The markers on an LFT fall into three groups. It helps to think of the liver as a busy factory.

  • Enzymes (the smoke alarm). SGPT, SGOT, ALP and GGT. These sit inside liver and bile duct cells. When cells are stressed, the enzymes leak into the blood and the numbers rise.
  • Bilirubin (the drainage system). Bilirubin is a yellow pigment left over when old red blood cells break down. A healthy liver processes it and sends it out with bile. If it builds up, eyes and skin can turn yellow.
  • Proteins (the factory output). Albumin, globulin and total protein. The liver makes albumin every day. Low albumin over months can point to a liver that is not keeping up.

No single line diagnoses anything. Doctors read the pattern across all three groups, which is exactly what you will learn to do below.

LFT normal range chart

Test Also called Typical adult normal range What it tells you
Total bilirubin Serum bilirubin 0.3 to 1.2 mg/dL How well the liver clears old red cell pigment
Direct bilirubin Conjugated bilirubin 0 to 0.3 mg/dL Processed bilirubin. High values hint at blocked bile flow
Indirect bilirubin Unconjugated bilirubin 0.2 to 0.8 mg/dL Raw bilirubin. High values hint at red cell breakdown or Gilbert's syndrome
SGPT ALT 7 to 40 U/L The most liver-specific damage marker
SGOT AST 8 to 40 U/L Found in liver, muscles and heart
ALP Alkaline phosphatase 44 to 147 U/L Bile ducts and bone. Naturally higher in teenagers and pregnancy
GGT GGTP, gamma GT Men 8 to 61 U/L, women 5 to 36 U/L Bile ducts. Very sensitive to alcohol
Total protein Serum protein 6.0 to 8.3 g/dL Overall protein in the blood
Albumin Serum albumin 3.5 to 5.0 g/dL Main protein the liver makes
Globulin 2.0 to 3.5 g/dL Proteins linked to immunity
A/G ratio Albumin to globulin ratio 1.0 to 2.2 The balance between the two

Labs use slightly different machines, so their ranges differ a little. Always compare your number with the range printed on your own report, not a chart from the internet, including this one.

How to read your LFT report: 5 common patterns

Here is how doctors usually read the combinations. Use it to understand your report, then discuss it with your doctor.

  • Only SGPT and SGOT are mildly high, with SGPT higher. This is the most common pattern in India. It usually points to fatty liver, belly weight, high sugar or a medicine. Our guide to SGPT normal range and what high SGPT means explains the levels in detail.
  • SGOT is more than twice SGPT, and GGT is high. This combination is a classic sign of alcohol-related liver stress.
  • ALP and GGT are high, with or without high bilirubin. This suggests bile is not flowing freely, for example from gallstones. Doctors usually order an ultrasound next.
  • Only bilirubin is high, mostly indirect, and the enzymes are normal. This is often Gilbert's syndrome, a harmless inherited trait seen in a few people in every hundred. Bilirubin rises when you fast or fall ill, then settles.
  • Albumin is low and bilirubin is high. This needs a doctor soon. It can mean the liver has been under strain for a long time.

Is fasting required for an LFT test?

Many labs ask for 8 to 10 hours of fasting, mainly because an LFT is often booked with sugar and lipid tests. Water is allowed. If your LFT is done alone, the lab may not insist on fasting, so follow their instructions.

  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before the test. Regular drinkers will see GGT stay high for weeks.
  • Skip heavy workouts for 48 hours. Hard exercise raises SGOT from your muscles.
  • Tell the doctor about every medicine, protein powder and herbal product you take.
  • Give the sample in the morning if you plan to compare results over time.

What causes abnormal LFT results?

  • Fatty liver, linked to belly weight, sugar, maida and insulin resistance
  • Alcohol, including regular weekend drinking
  • Viral hepatitis A, B, C or E
  • Medicines such as high-dose paracetamol, some antibiotics, TB drugs and statins
  • Unregulated bodybuilding, weight loss or "detox" products
  • Gallstones and bile duct problems
  • An underactive thyroid, diabetes and high triglycerides
  • Autoimmune liver conditions and some inherited disorders, less commonly

Fatty liver is by far the most common cause. If your ultrasound mentions it, read what grade 1 and grade 2 fatty liver mean. A normal LFT does not rule fatty liver out, so see how to test for fatty liver as well.

Deranged LFT: when to worry

"Deranged LFT" simply means some values sit outside the normal range. How much they are out matters more than the word itself.

What you see What to do
SGPT or SGOT up to 3 times the upper limit, no symptoms Fix diet, weight and alcohol. Retest in 6 to 8 weeks
SGPT or SGOT 3 to 10 times the upper limit See a doctor within days
SGPT or SGOT more than 10 times the upper limit Urgent medical evaluation
Yellow eyes, dark urine, pale stools, swollen belly or legs, confusion See a doctor the same day

How to bring your LFT values back to normal

  • Lose 5 to 10 percent of your body weight if you carry belly fat. This is the most reliable fix for a fatty liver pattern.
  • Cut added sugar, sweet drinks and maida. Excess sugar is turned straight into liver fat.
  • Stop alcohol until your numbers normalise, then keep it rare.
  • Review medicines and supplements with your doctor. Never stop a prescribed drug on your own.
  • Walk 150 minutes a week and add two strength sessions if you can.
  • Eat home-cooked meals built on dals, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein.
  • Plain coffee in moderation is linked with healthier liver enzymes in studies. Read more in is black coffee good for fatty liver.

Retest after 6 to 8 weeks. Liver cells recover well once the cause is removed, so mild rises often settle within two to three months.

LFT test price and how often to repeat it

An LFT usually costs a few hundred rupees at most Indian labs, and many health packages include it. If your report was normal and you have no risk factors, once a year is plenty. If values were high, your doctor will usually repeat it after 6 to 12 weeks to see the trend.

Where Purezen Liv-It-Up fits in

Purezen Liv-It-Up is a 17-ingredient capsule that brings together Milk Thistle, Bhumi Amla, Kutki, Dandelion, Punarnava and Turmeric. Each two-capsule serving carries 400 mg of Milk Thistle extract standardised to 80 percent silymarin, its main active group. These are herbs traditionally used to support healthy liver function and the liver's natural detox work.

Purezen is FSSAI registered and the capsules use a vegetable capsule shell. Use Liv-It-Up as a support alongside the weight, sugar and alcohol steps above and your doctor's advice. If your SGPT is more than three times the normal limit, get a medical evaluation first. No capsule replaces that.

Frequently asked questions

What is the full form of LFT?

LFT stands for Liver Function Test. Some labs call it a liver profile or a hepatic function panel. It is the same group of tests.

What is the normal range of LFT?

There is no single LFT number. Each marker has its own range, for example SGPT 7 to 40 U/L, total bilirubin 0.3 to 1.2 mg/dL and albumin 3.5 to 5.0 g/dL. Check the chart above and the range on your report.

What does high GGT in an LFT mean?

A high GGT most often comes from alcohol, fatty liver or certain medicines. When ALP is also high, it can point to a bile flow problem, so doctors may order an ultrasound.

Can the LFT be normal in fatty liver?

Yes. Many people with grade 1 fatty liver have a completely normal LFT. An ultrasound or a FibroScan is the better test for liver fat.

LFT test kya hota hai?

LFT ek blood test hai jo batata hai ki aapka liver kitna theek kaam kar raha hai. Ismein liver ke enzymes, bilirubin aur proteins check hote hain. Kuch values badhi hon to doctor se zaroor milein.
