The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland at the front of your neck. It sits just below the Adam's apple, wrapped around the windpipe, and weighs only 15 to 25 grams. For its size it has an outsized job: it sets the speed at which every cell in your body works.
Thyroid kya hota hai? In simple Hindi, thyroid gale mein ek chhoti grandhi hai jo sharir ki raftaar tay karti hai. When people say "I have thyroid", they mean the gland is working too slowly or too fast. Everyone has a thyroid. Not everyone has a thyroid problem.
Where is the thyroid gland located?
Put a finger on your Adam's apple, the bump in the middle of the neck. Slide down about two finger widths. The thyroid sits there, with one lobe on each side of the windpipe and a thin bridge called the isthmus joining them. It is soft and usually cannot be felt. If you can see or feel a swelling there, that is called a goitre and needs a doctor's look.
Thyroid gland structure in brief
| Part | What it is |
|---|---|
| Right and left lobes | The two wings of the butterfly, each about 4 to 5 cm long |
| Isthmus | The narrow bridge joining the lobes across the windpipe |
| Follicles | Tiny sacs inside the gland where hormones are made and stored |
| Parathyroid glands | Four pea-sized glands behind the thyroid that control calcium, not thyroid hormone |
What does the thyroid gland do?
The thyroid makes two main hormones, T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine). It builds them from iodine in your food and an amino acid called tyrosine. The brain controls the output through TSH, thyroid stimulating hormone, which rises when the body needs more and falls when it has enough.
These hormones control:
- How fast you burn calories, which is your metabolism
- Body temperature and how warm or cold you feel
- Heart rate and how hard the heart pumps
- Growth in children and brain development in babies
- Digestion speed, mood, memory and concentration
- Skin, hair and nail health
- Menstrual cycles and fertility in women
That list explains why thyroid problems cause such scattered symptoms. Tiredness, weight change, hair fall, cold hands and irregular periods all trace back to the same gland.
What goes wrong: underactive vs overactive
- Hypothyroidism (underactive). Too little hormone. Everything slows: weight gain, tiredness, feeling cold, constipation, dry skin, hair fall. This is the common type in India, especially in women.
- Hyperthyroidism (overactive). Too much hormone. Everything speeds up: weight loss, racing heart, sweating, shaky hands, anxiety, poor sleep.
- Goitre and nodules. Swelling or lumps in the gland. Most are harmless, but any neck swelling needs a check.

Why thyroid problems are so common in India
Roughly one in ten Indian adults has a thyroid disorder, and many do not know it. Iodine deficiency was the historical reason, which is why salt is iodised. Today the bigger drivers are autoimmune thyroiditis, where the immune system attacks the gland, along with stress, poor sleep, and low selenium and vitamin D. Women are five to eight times more likely to be affected than men.
What the thyroid needs to work well
- Iodine. Iodised salt covers most people. Do not take extra iodine without a doctor's advice; too much is also harmful.
- Selenium and zinc. Found in eggs, nuts, seeds, dals and whole grains. Both are needed to convert T4 into active T3.
- Tyrosine. An amino acid from protein foods like dal, paneer, eggs and milk.
- Vitamin D. Low levels are linked to autoimmune thyroid disease. Fifteen minutes of morning sun helps.
- Sleep and stress control. High cortisol interferes with thyroid hormone conversion.
When to get your thyroid tested
A TSH blood test is cheap, needs no fasting and is the first step. Get one if you have three or more symptoms from either list above, if thyroid problems run in your family, if you are planning a pregnancy, or if you are over 35 and have never been tested. Women with irregular periods, unexplained weight gain or hair fall should test early rather than late.
Where Purezen ThyroFix fits in
Purezen ThyroFix is a 14-ingredient capsule built around exactly the nutrients the gland depends on: Iodine, Selenium, Zinc, Copper, L-Tyrosine and Vitamin D3, alongside Ashwagandha, Kachnar, Sea Kelp and Guggul. These are nutrients and herbs traditionally used to support healthy thyroid function and metabolism.
Purezen is FSSAI registered and the capsules use a vegetable capsule shell. ThyroFix is not a replacement for thyroid medicine prescribed by your doctor. It works alongside iodised salt, good food, sleep and regular testing, not in place of them.
Frequently asked questions
What is the size of a normal thyroid gland?
Each lobe is about 4 to 5 cm long and 2 cm wide. The whole gland weighs 15 to 25 grams in adults. On ultrasound, a volume of roughly 10 to 18 ml is considered normal.
Can you live without a thyroid gland?
Yes. If the gland is removed for medical reasons, daily thyroid hormone tablets replace what it made, and people live normal lives.
Does the thyroid gland affect weight?
Yes. An underactive gland slows metabolism and causes modest weight gain, usually 2 to 5 kg. An overactive gland causes weight loss. Very large weight changes usually have other causes as well.
Is thyroid a lifelong problem?
Most hypothyroidism is managed for life with a daily tablet and regular TSH checks. Some cases caused by pregnancy, medicines or temporary inflammation settle on their own.
