N-acetyl cysteine, or NAC, is a stable form of the amino acid cysteine. Your body uses cysteine to make glutathione, the antioxidant that sits at the centre of your cells' defence against daily damage. That single job explains why NAC shows up both in hospital medicine cabinets and in antioxidant supplements.

If you have searched "N acetyl cysteine tablet uses" after seeing it on a prescription or a supplement label, this guide explains both sides, what research suggests, the usual dose and the side effects.

NAC as a medicine

Doctors have used NAC for decades in two main ways:

  • As an antidote to paracetamol overdose. Given in hospital, usually through a drip, it protects the liver by refilling its glutathione stores.
  • As a mucus thinner. Effervescent tablets, syrups and respules help loosen thick phlegm in bronchitis and long-term lung conditions.

In India, high-dose NAC tablets, effervescent tablets and respules are sold as medicines. Take those only as your doctor prescribes.

Why NAC matters for glutathione

Glutathione is made inside your cells from three amino acids: glutamine, glycine and cysteine. Cysteine is usually the one in short supply, so it limits how much glutathione you can make.

Swallowing glutathione directly is less straightforward than it sounds, because much of it is broken down in the gut. NAC takes another route. It supplies the missing cysteine, and your cells build their own glutathione. For the bigger picture, read glutathione, the master antioxidant and what free radicals do to your body.

NAC benefits: what research suggests

  • Antioxidant defence. Studies show NAC raises glutathione levels, especially in older adults and people whose levels run low. Research pairing NAC with glycine in older adults has looked at energy and other healthy-ageing markers.
  • Liver support. Its hospital use for paracetamol injury is well established. Research on its role in everyday liver health and fatty liver is ongoing. See our LFT test guide to understand liver numbers.
  • Lungs. Besides thinning mucus, some studies in long-term lung conditions found fewer flare-ups at higher daily doses.
  • Women's health. In some trials in women with PCOS, NAC was linked with better ovulation and insulin markers. Our myo-inositol guide covers the related research.
  • Sperm quality. A few small studies in men saw improvements in sperm quality markers.

Much of this research is still early or small. NAC is best seen as a building block for your body's own antioxidant system, not a fix for any disease.

NAC dose: how much is typical?

Use Typical amount
Supplement for antioxidant support 600 mg once or twice a day
Amounts used in research 600 to 1,800 mg a day, split into doses
Medical uses Set by your doctor
  • Take it with a full glass of water.
  • If it upsets your stomach, take it after food.
  • NAC has a natural sulphur smell, like eggs. That is normal and not a sign it has gone bad.

NAC side effects

NAC is generally well tolerated at supplement doses. Possible side effects include:

  • Nausea, vomiting or stomach pain
  • Loose stools
  • An unpleasant taste or smell
  • Skin rash or itching, rarely

Who should be careful with NAC

If you Why What to do
Have asthma The inhaled form can tighten airways Use inhaled NAC only under medical supervision
Take blood thinners NAC may slow clotting slightly Ask your doctor first
Take nitroglycerin for chest pain Combined, they can cause headache and low blood pressure Avoid unless your doctor approves
Have surgery planned Possible effect on clotting Stop 2 weeks before
Are pregnant or breastfeeding Supplement safety is not well studied Only on your doctor's advice

NAC, glutathione and alpha lipoic acid compared

Ingredient What it is How it works
NAC A form of the amino acid cysteine Supplies the building block cells need to make glutathione
Glutathione The body's main internal antioxidant Works directly, though how much survives digestion is debated
Alpha lipoic acid A fatty acid made in small amounts by the body Works in both water and fat, and helps recycle other antioxidants

The three work well together. Read more in alpha lipoic acid, the universal antioxidant.

Is NAC found in food?

NAC itself is not found in food, but cysteine is. Good sources include eggs, chicken, fish, curd and paneer, dals, sunflower seeds, garlic, onions and broccoli. A protein-rich Indian diet gives your body steady cysteine to work with.

Where Purezen OxiShield fits in

Purezen OxiShield is a 17-ingredient antioxidant capsule that brings NAC together with Astaxanthin, Lycopene, Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Quercetin, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Grape Seed, Green Tea, Resveratrol, Vitamins C and E, Zinc and Selenium. These are nutrients traditionally used to support the body's antioxidant defences, healthy skin and eyes, and everyday cell health.

OxiShield is a broad daily antioxidant blend, not a high-dose NAC medicine. Purezen is FSSAI registered and the capsules use a vegetable capsule shell. NAC also appears in Purezen HerBalance, alongside inositol, for women's hormonal balance. Both work alongside good food, sleep and your doctor's care.

Frequently asked questions

What is N-acetyl cysteine used for?

As a medicine, it is used for paracetamol overdose and to thin mucus. As a supplement, it is used to support the body's own glutathione production and antioxidant defences.

Can I take NAC daily?

Many adults take 600 mg daily as a supplement. If you have asthma, take blood thinners or have a medical condition, check with your doctor first.

Is NAC good for the liver?

NAC protects the liver in paracetamol overdose, which is a hospital treatment. Its role in everyday liver health is still being studied.

NAC or glutathione: which is better?

NAC raises glutathione by supplying cysteine, and it is well studied. Oral glutathione works more directly, but absorption is debated. Many formulas use both.

N acetyl cysteine uses in Hindi?

NAC ek amino acid hai jisse sharir glutathione banata hai, jo sabse zaroori antioxidant hai. Dawa ke roop mein yeh balgam patla karne aur paracetamol ki zyada matra ke ilaaj mein di jati hai. Supplement ke roop mein lene se pehle doctor se salah lein.
