Arjun ki chaal is the bark of the Arjuna tree, Terminalia arjuna, and Ayurveda's best-known herb for the heart. In English it is simply called Arjuna bark. For centuries it has been boiled in milk or water and taken as a daily heart tonic, and it remains one of the most studied Indian herbs today.
This guide covers what is inside the bark, what research actually shows, how to make arjun ki chaal ka kadha at home, the right amount, and who should avoid it.
What is arjun ki chaal?
The Arjuna is a tall, evergreen tree that grows along rivers and streams across central and south India. Its bark peels off in smooth sheets, grey-white outside and pinkish-red inside. The inner bark is dried and ground into the brown powder sold as arjun ki chaal.
Classical Ayurvedic texts describe Arjuna as hridya, meaning good for the heart. The physician Vagbhata is often credited with first recommending it for heart complaints, and it has stayed in use ever since.
What is inside Arjuna bark?
- Triterpenoids such as arjunolic acid and arjunic acid, studied for their effect on heart muscle
- Flavonoids and polyphenols, plant antioxidants that help protect cells from daily damage
- Tannins, which give the kadha its bitter, astringent taste
- Minerals including calcium, magnesium and zinc
Antioxidants matter for the heart because oxidised LDL cholesterol is one of the triggers for plaque in arteries. For the full picture of your lipid report, see how to lower cholesterol naturally, with the LDL and HDL chart.
Arjun ki chaal benefits: what research says
Most studies on Arjuna are small and come from India. The results are encouraging, but they are not large enough to replace heart medicine. Here is what has been observed.
- Heart muscle support. In small clinical studies of people with stable chest pain on exertion, adding Arjuna bark to usual care was linked with fewer episodes and better exercise capacity.
- Cholesterol. Several studies reported falls in total cholesterol and LDL, with Arjuna also working as an antioxidant in comparisons with vitamin E.
- Blood pressure. Some studies saw a mild lowering of blood pressure, which is useful for some people and a reason for caution in others.
- Antioxidant protection. Lab and human studies show higher antioxidant activity after taking Arjuna.
- Traditional uses beyond the heart include wound healing, bone strength and urinary health, though these are less studied.
In short, Arjuna is traditionally used to support heart strength, healthy cholesterol and circulation. It works best as part of a heart-healthy routine, never as a replacement for a cardiologist's advice.
How to use arjun ki chaal
People most often search "arjun ki chaal kaise piye". There are three common ways.
1. Arjuna ksheer pak (with milk)
This is the classical method. Milk helps extract the fat-soluble compounds and softens the bitter taste.
- Add 1 teaspoon (about 3 g) of arjun ki chaal powder to 1 cup of milk and 1 cup of water.
- Simmer on a low flame until about half the liquid remains.
- Strain, let it cool slightly, and drink warm once a day.

2. Arjuna kadha (with water)
If you avoid dairy, boil 1 teaspoon of powder in 2 cups of water until 1 cup remains. A little grated ginger or a pinch of cinnamon improves the taste. Avoid adding sugar.
3. Capsules and extracts
Capsules give a measured, consistent amount without the taste. Extracts are concentrated, so follow the label rather than the powder dose.
How much and for how long?
Ayurvedic references suggest 3 to 6 g of bark powder a day. Most people take it either in the morning after breakfast or at night. Give it 8 to 12 weeks, then review how you feel with your doctor, especially if you take heart or blood pressure medicine.
Arjun ki chaal side effects
Arjuna is well tolerated by most adults in usual amounts. Possible side effects include:
- Mild stomach upset, gas or constipation, mainly from the tannins
- Nausea if taken on an empty stomach
- Headache or a feeling of light-headedness in some people
Who should be careful
| If you | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Take blood pressure or heart medicine | Arjuna may add to their effect | Ask your cardiologist first |
| Take medicine for sugar | It may lower blood sugar slightly | Check sugar levels and tell your doctor |
| Take blood thinners | Possible added effect on clotting | Ask your doctor first |
| Are pregnant or breastfeeding | Not enough safety data | Avoid |
| Have surgery planned | Possible effect on blood pressure and clotting | Stop 2 weeks before |
Never stop a prescribed heart medicine to try Arjuna instead. It is a support, not a switch.
Powder, kadha or capsule: which is better?
| Form | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Powder (chaal) | Low cost, traditional ksheer pak | Bitter taste, quality varies, dose is approximate |
| Kadha or tea | Daily ritual, easy on the stomach | Takes time to prepare every day |
| Capsule or extract | Measured dose, travel friendly, often lab tested | Check the extract strength and the brand's testing |
Whatever the form, buy from a brand that lists the botanical name, Terminalia arjuna, and tests for purity. Loose bark powder can be mixed with other barks or carry heavy metals if it is not tested.
