Cholesterol is a waxy substance your body needs in small amounts. It builds cell walls, makes hormones and helps you digest fat. The liver makes most of it. Food adds the rest. The problem is never cholesterol itself. It is too much of the wrong kind sitting in your blood for years, slowly narrowing the arteries that feed your heart and brain.

In India the picture is worse than most people think. Heart disease strikes Indians about ten years earlier than people in the West, and high LDL with low HDL is one of the main reasons. The good news is that cholesterol responds well to steady, boring changes. This guide covers the numbers, what they mean, and the steps that actually move them.

LDL, HDL, VLDL: what each line on your report means

  • LDL (low-density lipoprotein). The "bad" cholesterol. It carries cholesterol into artery walls. Lower is better.
  • HDL (high-density lipoprotein). The "good" cholesterol. It carries cholesterol back to the liver for disposal. Higher is better.
  • VLDL (very low-density lipoprotein). Carries triglycerides. High VLDL usually means high triglycerides.
  • Total cholesterol. The sum of all types. Useful, but less telling than LDL and HDL on their own.
  • Non-HDL cholesterol. Total minus HDL. Many doctors now watch this more closely than total.

Cholesterol normal range chart (mg/dL)

Test Good Borderline High risk
Total cholesterol Below 200 200 to 239 240 and above
LDL cholesterol Below 100 100 to 159 160 and above
HDL cholesterol 60 and above 40 to 59 Below 40 (men) or below 50 (women)
VLDL cholesterol 5 to 30 30 to 40 Above 40
Triglycerides Below 150 150 to 199 200 and above
Non-HDL cholesterol Below 130 130 to 159 160 and above

If you already have diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of early heart disease, your doctor may set a tighter LDL target, often below 70. Ranges vary slightly between labs, so read the one on your own report. Triglycerides have their own guide: triglycerides normal range and how to reduce them.

High cholesterol symptoms: why you cannot feel it

High cholesterol has no symptoms. None. People search for warning signs, but the first sign is usually a blood report or, worse, a heart event. Rare clues at very high levels include yellowish deposits around the eyes or on tendons. The only reliable check is a lipid profile, ideally every year after 30, or earlier if heart disease runs in your family.

What causes high cholesterol in Indians?

  • Refined oils reheated for frying, and vanaspati or dalda in bakery and street food
  • Sugar, maida and large portions of white rice, which push triglycerides and LDL up together
  • Ghee, butter and full-fat paneer in daily quantities rather than occasional ones
  • Sitting most of the day with no regular walking
  • Belly fat, even at a normal weight
  • Smoking, which drags HDL down
  • An underactive thyroid, which raises LDL
  • Genetics. Familial hypercholesterolemia is common in India and needs a doctor, not just diet

Because thyroid imbalance is a hidden cause, check your symptoms against our thyroid symptoms and TSH guide if your LDL is high despite good food habits.

How to lower cholesterol naturally: 10 steps that work

  • Start the day with oats or dalia. Soluble fibre binds cholesterol in the gut and removes it. One bowl daily for 6 weeks can drop LDL by 5 to 10 percent.
  • Add isabgol. One teaspoon in water before dinner is one of the most concentrated fibre sources available in India.
  • Eat dal at every meal. Moong, chana, masoor, rajma and chole all add fibre and plant protein that replace fatty food on the plate.
  • Switch to walnuts, almonds and flaxseed. A small handful of nuts and a tablespoon of ground flaxseed daily raise HDL and lower LDL.
  • Fix the oil. Use cold-pressed mustard, groundnut or rice bran oil. Never reuse frying oil. Cut vanaspati and bakery fats completely.
  • Eat garlic and methi. Two raw garlic cloves and a teaspoon of soaked methi seeds each morning are traditional Indian habits with real evidence behind them.
  • Walk 30 minutes a day, six days a week. Brisk walking is the most reliable way to raise HDL. Add two strength sessions if you can.
  • Lose belly fat. Even 4 to 5 kg off the waist improves the whole lipid profile.
  • Stop smoking. HDL starts recovering within weeks.
  • Cut sugar and alcohol. Both raise triglycerides and VLDL, and both are easier to remove than most people admit.

Retest after 12 weeks. Cholesterol moves slower than triglycerides, so give the changes a full quarter before judging them.

A one-day Indian cholesterol-lowering plate

  • Morning: Soaked methi seeds, then oats with walnuts and a fruit
  • Lunch: Two phulkas or a small bowl of brown rice, a bowl of dal, a big serving of sabzi, curd
  • Evening: Roasted chana or a handful of almonds, green tea
  • Dinner: Vegetable and dal-heavy, light on oil, finished by 8 pm, followed by a 15 minute walk

Where Purezen HeartThrob fits in

Purezen HeartThrob is a 14-ingredient capsule built around Arjuna, CoQ10, Garlic, Guggul, Green Tea Catechins, Resveratrol, Grape Seed, Pomegranate and plant-source Omega-3 (EPA and DHA from algae). These are herbs and nutrients traditionally used to support healthy cholesterol levels, blood circulation and heart energy.

Purezen is FSSAI registered and the capsules use a vegetable capsule shell. HeartThrob is a support, not a substitute. If your doctor has prescribed a statin, keep taking it. HeartThrob works alongside the fibre, oil and walking steps above, never in place of them.

Frequently asked questions

How to reduce cholesterol in 30 days?

Cut fried food, sugar and alcohol completely, eat oats and dal daily, walk 30 minutes a day, and add isabgol. Most people see the first drop in 4 to 6 weeks, with the full effect at 12 weeks.

Is a total cholesterol of 220 dangerous?

It is borderline. What matters more is the split. If LDL is above 130 or HDL is below 40, act now. Ask your doctor to interpret it with your blood pressure and sugar.

How can I increase HDL cholesterol?

Brisk walking, quitting smoking, nuts, flaxseed, fatty fish or algal omega-3, and losing belly fat all raise HDL. It rises slowly, so give it three months.

Does ghee increase cholesterol?

In small daily amounts, a teaspoon or two, ghee is fine for most healthy people. In the quantities used for frying and sweets, it raises LDL. The problem is dose, not ghee itself.

Can cholesterol be controlled without medicine?

Mild to moderate rises often can, with consistent diet and walking. Very high LDL, or a family history of early heart disease, usually needs medicine as well. Your doctor decides based on your overall risk.
