A lipid profile test measures the fats in your blood: total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides and VLDL. In a healthy adult, total cholesterol should be below 200 mg/dL, LDL below 100, HDL above 40 in men and above 50 in women, and triglycerides below 150. Most reports also print non-HDL cholesterol and a few ratios, which this guide explains line by line.
The test is also called a lipid panel or cholesterol test. It is one of the most useful blood tests for heart health, because high cholesterol causes no symptoms until it has quietly built up in the arteries for years.
What a lipid profile test checks
- Total cholesterol: all the cholesterol in your blood added together.
- LDL cholesterol: often called "bad" cholesterol. It carries cholesterol into artery walls, where it can form plaque.
- HDL cholesterol: often called "good" cholesterol. It carries extra cholesterol back to the liver to be cleared.
- Triglycerides: the fat your body makes from extra sugar, refined carbs and alcohol, and stores for energy.
- VLDL cholesterol: the particles that carry triglycerides. Most labs estimate it as triglycerides divided by 5.
- Non-HDL cholesterol: total cholesterol minus HDL. It counts every particle that can clog arteries.
Lipid profile normal values chart
| Test | Desirable | Borderline | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total cholesterol | Below 200 mg/dL | 200 to 239 | 240 or more |
| LDL cholesterol | Below 100 mg/dL | 130 to 159 | 160 or more |
| HDL cholesterol | 40 or more (men), 50 or more (women) | Below these is low | 60 or more is protective |
| Triglycerides | Below 150 mg/dL | 150 to 199 | 200 or more |
| VLDL cholesterol | Up to 30 mg/dL | 31 to 40 | Above 40 |
| Non-HDL cholesterol | Below 130 mg/dL | 130 to 159 | 160 or more |
An LDL of 100 to 129 is called near optimal. Labs differ slightly, so always read the reference range printed on your own report.

What VLDL cholesterol means
VLDL stands for very low density lipoprotein. Your liver packs triglycerides into VLDL particles and sends them out into the blood. As they give up their fat, they shrink into LDL.
Most labs do not measure VLDL directly. They calculate it as triglycerides divided by 5. So a high VLDL almost always means high triglycerides, and the fix is the same: less sugar, less refined carbs, less alcohol and more movement. Read our triglycerides normal range guide for the details.
What non-HDL cholesterol means
Non-HDL cholesterol is simply total cholesterol minus HDL. It adds up LDL, VLDL and other particles that can deposit in arteries. Many heart specialists now prefer it to LDL alone, especially when triglycerides are high, because it does not depend on a calculation that breaks down at high triglyceride levels.
A simple rule: your non-HDL target is your LDL target plus 30. If your doctor wants LDL below 100, non-HDL should be below 130.
Cholesterol ratios on your report
| Ratio | How it is worked out | Desirable |
|---|---|---|
| Total cholesterol to HDL | Total cholesterol divided by HDL | Below 5, ideally below 3.5 |
| LDL to HDL | LDL divided by HDL | Below 3.5, ideally below 2.5 |
| Triglycerides to HDL | Triglycerides divided by HDL | Below 2 is ideal |
Ratios show balance. Two people can have the same total cholesterol, but the one with a higher HDL usually has the lower risk.
Why Indians need to read this report closely
Indians often show a particular pattern: high triglycerides, low HDL and smaller, denser LDL particles, even at a normal body weight. Doctors call this atherogenic dyslipidaemia. It helps explain why heart attacks strike Indians about 10 years earlier than people in many Western countries. Read why heart attacks are rising among young Indians.
Because of this, the Lipid Association of India sets lower LDL targets for people at higher risk, for example below 70 mg/dL for people with diabetes plus other risk factors, and lower still after a heart attack. Your doctor sets your personal target.
How LDL is calculated, and when it is wrong
Many labs do not measure LDL directly. They use the Friedewald formula: LDL equals total cholesterol minus HDL minus triglycerides divided by 5. This works well in most people, but becomes unreliable when triglycerides are above 400 mg/dL. In that case, ask for a direct LDL test or go by non-HDL cholesterol.
Do you need to fast for a lipid profile test?
Not always. Many guidelines now accept a non-fasting test for routine screening, because cholesterol barely changes after a meal. Triglycerides do rise after food, so labs often still ask for a 9 to 12 hour fast. Follow your lab's instructions.
- Plain water is fine during the fast.
- Skip alcohol for 24 hours before the test.
- Avoid a very heavy or oily dinner the night before.
- Keep taking your regular medicines unless your doctor says otherwise.
A basic lipid profile usually costs a few hundred rupees at most Indian labs, and it is part of most health check-up packages.
How often to get a lipid profile
- Healthy adults: from age 20, every 4 to 5 years if results are normal.
- Diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking or belly weight: every year.
- Parent or sibling with an early heart attack: start earlier and ask your doctor about a one-time lipoprotein(a) test.
- On cholesterol medicine: 6 to 12 weeks after starting or changing the dose, then as advised.
How to improve your numbers
- Cut sugar, sweet drinks and maida. This brings down triglycerides and VLDL fastest.
- Swap some cooking oil for nuts and seeds. Use less oil overall, and avoid vanaspati and reused frying oil.
- Add soluble fibre: oats, dals, rajma, apples and soaked methi seeds help lower LDL.
- Walk briskly 30 minutes most days. Regular exercise raises HDL.
- Lose 5 to 10 percent of body weight if you carry belly fat.
- Stop smoking. It lowers HDL and damages artery walls.
- Take prescribed medicine as advised. Statins save lives in people at high risk. Never stop them on your own.

Where Purezen HeartThrob fits in
Purezen HeartThrob is a 14-ingredient capsule that brings together CoQ10, Arjuna, Pomegranate, Garlic, Green Tea catechins, Resveratrol, Grape Seed, algae-based omega-3 (EPA and DHA), Guggul, Gotukola, Turmeric, Magnesium and Vitamin D3. These are herbs and nutrients traditionally used to support healthy cholesterol levels, circulation and heart energy.
Purezen is FSSAI registered and the capsules use a vegetable capsule shell. HeartThrob works alongside the food and exercise steps above and any medicine your doctor prescribes. It does not replace them. If you take statins or blood thinners, show the label to your doctor before starting. To learn more about two of its ingredients, read CoQ10 for heart health and arjun ki chaal benefits.
Frequently asked questions
What is the normal value of a lipid profile test?
Total cholesterol below 200 mg/dL, LDL below 100, HDL above 40 in men and above 50 in women, triglycerides below 150, VLDL up to 30 and non-HDL below 130.
Is fasting required for a lipid profile test?
Not always. Cholesterol changes little after food, but triglycerides rise, so many labs still ask for a 9 to 12 hour fast. Water is allowed.
What does high VLDL mean?
VLDL is usually calculated from triglycerides, so a high VLDL means your triglycerides are high. Cutting sugar, refined carbs and alcohol brings both down.
Which is more important, LDL or HDL?
Both matter, but lowering a high LDL or non-HDL cholesterol has the strongest evidence for protecting the heart. A low HDL is a warning sign worth acting on.
Lipid profile test kya hai?
Lipid profile ek blood test hai jo khoon mein cholesterol aur triglycerides ki matra batata hai. Isme total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides aur VLDL aate hain. Dil ki sehat samajhne ke liye yeh sabse zaroori test mein se ek hai.
