Omega 3 capsules supply EPA and DHA, two fats your heart, brain and eyes use every day. They clearly lower high triglycerides at higher doses and support brain and eye health, while results for preventing heart attacks in healthy people are mixed. Most adults need about 250 to 500 mg of EPA plus DHA a day from food or capsules. Vegetarians can get EPA and DHA from algal oil, which is where fish get it in the first place.

This guide explains the types of omega-3, omega 3 capsule benefits, how much to take, fish oil vs veg algal oil, side effects and the best Indian food sources.

The three omega-3s: ALA, EPA and DHA

  • ALA (alpha-linolenic acid): found in plants such as flaxseeds, walnuts, chia seeds, mustard oil and soybeans.
  • EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid): found in oily fish and algae. Best known for heart and triglyceride effects.
  • DHA (docosahexaenoic acid): found in oily fish and algae. A building block of the brain and the retina of the eye.

Your body can turn ALA into EPA and DHA, but only in small amounts, often less than 10 percent. So vegetarians who eat flax and walnuts still tend to run low on EPA and DHA. That is where capsules come in.

Omega 3 capsule benefits: what the research shows

  • Triglycerides: the strongest evidence. At 2 to 4 g of EPA plus DHA a day, usually prescribed by a doctor, triglycerides can fall by 20 to 30 percent or more. See our triglycerides guide.
  • Heart health: results are mixed. Regular fish eating is linked with fewer heart deaths. Large trials of ordinary fish oil capsules in healthy people showed small or no benefit, while one trial using a high-dose purified EPA medicine in high-risk patients on statins showed fewer heart events.
  • Brain and eyes: DHA is a major structural fat in the brain and retina. Low intake is linked with poorer memory with age, though capsules have not been shown to prevent dementia.
  • Pregnancy: DHA supports the baby's brain and eye development. Doctors often advise a DHA supplement during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Joints: in rheumatoid arthritis, omega-3s can modestly ease morning stiffness and tender joints.
  • Hair and skin: omega-3s support the skin barrier and a calm scalp. Read omega-3 for hair growth.

Omega 3 capsule dose: how much to take

Goal EPA + DHA per day
General health for adults 250 to 500 mg
Pregnancy and breastfeeding Extra 100 to 200 mg of DHA, as advised by your doctor
High triglycerides 2,000 to 4,000 mg, only under medical supervision

Read the label carefully. A "1,000 mg fish oil" capsule usually contains only about 300 mg of EPA plus DHA. The rest is other fats. Look for the EPA and DHA numbers, not the total oil.

Take omega-3 capsules with a meal that contains some fat. This improves absorption and cuts down fishy burps.

Fish oil vs veg algal oil

Fish oil Algal oil
Source Oily fish such as sardine, anchovy and mackerel Marine algae grown in tanks
Vegetarian No Yes, if the capsule shell is also vegetable-based
EPA and DHA Both, usually more EPA Both, often more DHA
Fishy aftertaste Common Rare
Mercury and pollutants Removed in good-quality oils, so check for testing Very low, as algae are grown in controlled tanks
Sustainability Depends on fishing practices Does not draw on wild fish stocks

Fish do not make EPA and DHA themselves; they get it by eating algae. Algal oil simply skips the fish.

Omega 3 capsule side effects

  • Fishy burps or aftertaste, nausea and loose stools are the most common. Taking capsules with food, or keeping them in the fridge, often helps.
  • Bleeding: high doses can thin the blood slightly. Check with your doctor if you take blood thinners such as warfarin, clopidogrel or daily aspirin, or before surgery.
  • Heart rhythm: some trials found a slightly higher risk of atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat, at doses above 1 g a day. Another reason to keep high doses under medical supervision.
  • Allergy: people allergic to fish or shellfish should choose algal oil and ask their doctor.

Omega 3 rich foods in an Indian kitchen

Food Type of omega-3 How to eat it
Bangda (mackerel), tarli (sardine), rawas (Indian salmon), hilsa EPA and DHA, rich Grilled or in curry, twice a week
Pomfret, surmai and other fish EPA and DHA, smaller amounts Prefer grilled or steamed over deep-fried
Flaxseeds (alsi) ALA, very rich 1 tablespoon freshly ground, in roti dough or curd
Walnuts (akhrot) ALA A small handful a day
Chia seeds ALA Soaked, in water, curd or oats
Mustard oil and soybean ALA Mustard oil for cooking, soya chunks or tofu in meals

Two portions of oily fish a week give most people enough EPA and DHA. Vegetarians should add daily ALA foods and consider an algal oil supplement. Our brain foods guide has more ideas.

Who may benefit most from omega 3 capsules

  • Vegetarians and people who rarely eat fish.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women, on medical advice.
  • People with high triglycerides, under a doctor's care. Check your numbers with a lipid profile test.
  • People with dry, flaky skin or joint stiffness who eat little fish.

Where Purezen HeartThrob and MindBoost fit in

Purezen HeartThrob is a 14-ingredient heart capsule that includes algae-based EPA and DHA (60 mg per 2-capsule serving) alongside CoQ10, Arjuna, Garlic, Pomegranate, Green Tea catechins, Resveratrol, Grape Seed, Guggul, Turmeric, Magnesium and Vitamin D3. These are traditionally used to support healthy cholesterol levels, circulation and heart energy.

Purezen MindBoost also contains algae-based EPA and DHA, along with Brahmi, Shankhpushpi, Ginkgo and L-Theanine, traditionally used to support focus and memory.

The omega-3 in these capsules is a supporting amount within a wider blend, well below a standalone omega-3 dose. If your doctor has advised omega-3 for triglycerides or pregnancy, follow that advice separately. Purezen is FSSAI registered, and both capsules use a vegetable capsule shell.
